Scan Any Folder and Find Every Duplicate Inside

How This Tool Works

🔍 How We Find Duplicates

We don't just compare filenames or file sizes—we look at what's actually in the image. Pixels, colors, patterns. That means we can catch duplicates even when they've been renamed, converted (JPG to PNG, for example), resized, or lightly edited. And it searches every subfolder without you having to lift a finger.

🔒 Where Your Photos Go (Spoiler: Nowhere)

Everything runs in your browser. No uploads, no servers, no cloud. Your images stay on your computer the entire time. The algorithm runs on JavaScript and Web Workers for speed. Want to test it? Load the page, disconnect from the internet, and it still works. That's how private it is.

✨ Works offline: Once the page loads, you can pull your internet and keep going.

🔒 Nothing gets uploaded. Everything runs in your browser and stays on your device.

How the System Duplicate Finder Works

Finding and managing duplicates across folders—without uploading a single thing

Step 1: Pick your folder

Choose any folder with images. We'll scan every subfolder automatically to find duplicates across your whole directory tree.

Everything stays on your device—no uploads, no servers.

Step 2: We scan

Our algorithm looks at images several different ways:

Visual fingerprinting: creates a unique signature based on what the image looks like

Perceptual hashing: finds images that look similar even in different formats or sizes

Cross-folder comparison: checks images across every folder and subfolder

Smart grouping: puts similar images together so they're easy to review

Step 3: Review what turned up

Once done, you'll see duplicates grouped with previews and file details:

Grouped results: similar images sit together so you can review whole sets at once

Full paths: see exactly where each duplicate lives

Visual previews: click thumbnails to see bigger versions with zoom

Side-by-side comparison: select up to 3 images and view them together

Step 4: Deal with them

Choose how to handle each duplicate:

Delete: permanently remove duplicates (be careful!)

Move to Duplicates Folder: relocate them for review before deleting

Copy filenames: export paths for external management

Download activity log: keep a record of everything you did

Tip: Move duplicates first, review the folder, then delete manually once you're sure. Gives you an out if you change your mind.

Your Photos Stay Yours

Unlike other duplicate finders, PixDuplicate processes everything locally in your browser. That means:

Your images never leave your device
No uploads, no cloud processing
No sign-up or personal info needed
Completely free with no limits
No watermarks or restrictions
Works offline after the page loads

Common Questions

What image formats work with this tool?

JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, BMP, and most other common formats. It can even find duplicates when the same image is saved in different formats.

Does it scan subfolders too?

Yes. Pick a folder and it digs through every subfolder inside it, no matter how deeply nested. You don't need to select directories one by one.

Is there a limit on how many images I can scan?

No hard limit. Very large collections (10,000+ images) just take longer. Quick Search speeds things up if you're working with a massive folder.

Where do my images go when I use this?

Nowhere. Everything processes in your browser. Your images never get uploaded—not to us, not to anyone. They stay on your device the entire time.

Can it find similar images, or just exact duplicates?

Both. It catches exact copies and visually similar images—including ones with different formats, sizes, or light edits. Works across your entire folder structure.

What if I accidentally delete the wrong image?

You'll see previews and file details before you act, so you can make an informed call. But for extra safety, use 'Move to Duplicates Folder' first—review everything, then delete manually later.

Does this work on Mac and Linux?

Yes. It runs in your browser, so it works on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chrome OS. Just need a modern browser.

Can I move or delete files from subfolders?

Yes, if you're using Chrome, Edge, or Safari. Those browsers support the File System Access API, which lets the tool move and delete files from any subfolder. Older browsers may be limited.

How much space can I actually recover?

Depends on your collection. Most people free up 10–40% of their photo storage. Collections with lots of downloads, screenshots, or backup copies tend to have the most duplicates.

Will this work on an external drive?

Yes, as long as it's connected and your browser can access it. The tool works with any folder your browser has permission to read—external drives and network locations included.
